Today, I start revisions on my novel from 2006. Or I should say, I start analyzing it to see if it deserves revision or complete restructuring. Today won’t be about writing as much as it will be about reading. I will spend the day going through the novel, seeing what works, what doesn’t work, what characters can stay, which ones need to go, etc. Once that’s done, the next step will be a beat sheet for every character who makes the cut.
I’m currently reading Story Physics, by Larry Brooks. I found his book, Story Engineering, an informative read, and I’m hoping to get plenty of instruction from this book as well.
So, today, it’s all about learning and observing. Check the current architecture, see if it has a strong foundation or if it’s built out of cardboard. Will I be able to remodel, or will I need to raze it to the ground and start over? Those are the questions I’m seeking to answer today.
