It was about a three-hour read, between yesterday and today. And the good news is, I believe it has potential. The bad news is, it’s gonna need a lot of work.

I’ve never reviewed my own book before so this will be interesting. The characters are likable, and I got a good sense of each one of them. The plot is…not terrible, but could use some beefing up. There is a lot of exposition, and some of those passages would work a lot better as an actual scene instead of a telling, which would definitely help with the word count. In general, it’s got a lot of potential.

So, now begins the work. Having read it, I need to figure out each character’s beat sheet. Their motivations. Their character arc. Before having read it, I was ready to cut my point of view characters from the seven it currently is to maybe half. But after re-reading it, I think it works with all seven. I just need to work on each of their individual stories.

One major thought that occurred to me was changing the flow of the book. I currently have it taking place in the present day, with flashbacks telling the story of eleven years ago. But I think it might work better being told chronologically. The first half of the book the story of the seven as kids in high school, the second half picking up their story eleven years later. I think it might play better for the beat sheets, showing a definite midpoint. And using Larry Brooks’ structure, the first half of part one would be them as orphans (not literally) moving to wanderers. The second half, with them being more mature, more established, would then have them going from warriors to martyrs (again, not literally).

So, those are my thoughts on my opusculum. Now, to work.

I finished reading Echoes this morning. It was about a three-hour read, between yesterday and today.
